I’m a big fan of peace. Consequently, I’m a big fan of the fact that the Colombian government and rebel group FARC have decided to resolve their issues through negotiations rather than trying to exterminate the opponent. However, a lot of my friends disagree with me.
In fact, half the Colombian population disagrees with me. They have no confidence in the talks and – under the opposition leadership of former President Alvaro Uribe – they have consistently demanded these talks to end or at least the conditions be renegotiated.
This has caused both the government and the FARC to dub them “enemies of peace” rather than “critics of these specific talks” what they are.
And this pisses me off, because my friends are good people.
When I was in favor of peace talks before the talks were held, or when I was critical of Uribe’s political responsibility for the killing of at least 4,000 civilians, my opinion was generally discarded as that of a “useful idiot.”

Sister Cristina Scuccia and history’s rebel nuns

Sister Cristina Scuccia has just released an album that includes her cover of Madonna’s hit song. But she isn’t the first nun to raise eyebrows.
“Sisters for life!” Madonna tweeted in October. She wasn’t referring to Lady Gaga or Rihanna: her affection was directed at Sicilian nun Sister Cristina Scuccia, who has recorded a cover of the US pop star’s 1984 hit Like a Virgin.
The singing nun – who invited the audience to join her in reciting the Lord’s Prayer after winning The Voice of Italy talent show in June – today releases her debut album. She claims her cover of the racy classic is more of “a secular prayer than a pop song”, telling Catholic newspaper Avvenire: “If you read the lyrics without being influenced by what has gone before, you discover that it is a song about the capacity of love to make people new again, to release them from their past. And that’s how I wanted to interpret it. That’s why we’ve transformed it from the pop-dance track it was into a romantic ballad.”
The 26-year-old argues: “I chose it myself, without any desire to provoke or scandalise.” Yet Italy’s Religious Information Service news agencycalled it a “reckless and sly commercial operation”. Death rates of young children have dropped to record lows in developingcountries. Experts say there are two main reasons for the decrease. Theyare improved government action, and simple protective health measures.Experts say the two have helped narrow the death rates between the richestand the poorest families.
The United Nations says 12.7 million children under the age of five died in 1990. By comparison, U.N. officials say about 6.3 million young children diedlast year. That is a huge drop, but still represents about 17,000 deaths everyday.
Eran Bendavid is a population health expert at Stanford University inCalifornia. He credits simple things for the sharp drop in deaths among lowand moderate-income countries. They include malarial bed nets and oralrehydration salts for treating diarrheal diseases.
“The poorest of the poor – we’re talking about countries where the people liveor $1 or $2 per day on average – have seen enormous declines in mortality.Their children are surviving at rates they have never seen before in thosecontexts.”

Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos’ 2010 campaign received a donation from a businessman who has been investigated for money laundering, according to Semana columnist Daniel Coronell.While Santos denies knowing businessman Alberto Aroch, at least two people — Aroch himself and prominent lawyer Alberto Preciado — testified that Santos had indeed met with the controversial figure and his relative, who wanted to discuss a campaign donation of around$75,000.On the day the check was written and made out to Santos’ campaign, it was voided and replaced with a check for around $50,000 made out to the president’s U Party so as to not exceed campaign donation limits
